During the last few years, Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR have enjoyed
rapid economic growth. This growth, however, rested on a limited number
of sectors and on products with low local added value. In order for
their growth to continue in a sustainable way, the three countries need
to increase the local added value of the goods and services they
produce. Moreover, for goods exported to Europe, environmental and
social aspects must also be taken into account in addition to quality
and price. One efficient way to address these issues is to integrate
them from the initial stage of product design.
Against this background, the 20-month EU Asia Invest “Cleaner Production
for Better Products” (CP4BP) project aims at increasing the capacity of
selected industries in Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR to develop
environmentally sound and socially responsible products that are better
adapted to the requirements of the European market (Cleaner and Better
Products).
The project will provide local companies with training and
state-of-the-art information on sustainable product design, as well as
support from international and national experts for the (re-)design of
their products during three 9-month demonstration projects in selected
sectors. It is led by the Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre and the
Asian Institute of Technology Center in Vietnam and by the Lao National
Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Phnom Penh Small and Medium
Industry Association in Lao PDR and Cambodia, and supported by the
United Nations Environment Programme and the Delft University of
Technology, both spearheading organizations in the field of sustainable
product development.

9-14 April 2008, Hanoi: Training of Trainers course for Demonstration
companies and National Experts
The 5-day training course will transfer knowledge on product-related CP
and D4S techniques and equip trainers with basic skills for D4S
implementation (For more information on D4S: see previous news below).
The first target group will be product development staff from the eight
selected demonstration companies, who will be their companies’
“champions” during the demonstration projects. The second target group
includes key national experts who will then be able to use the training
package and apply the D4S methodology to support industrial companies.
The training will combine content related to CP/product design and D4S
techniques, participative work on case studies, discussion and
assignments.
The training course will be followed by the launching of the
demonstration projects in the eight selected companies, which will take
place in the companies from 16 to 18 April.
More information on the selected companies and demonstration projects
will follow after the launching of the projects.

Wed, 2 April 2008: VIETNAMESE VERSION OF THE D4S MANUAL NOW AVAILABLE
The D4S manual (Design for Sustainability – A practical approach for
developing economies) provides a step-wise approach to boost the product
innovation capacities of SME and SMI, and to help them integrate the
economic, environmental and social dimensions in their product
development process.
The first part of the manual,
What is D4S and why do it? (Chapters 1 to 3) describes the D4S
concept in detail and what might motivate companies in developing
economies to adopt it.
The second part, How to do D4S in
practice (Chapters 4 to 6) explains three practical, step-by-step
approaches to execute a D4S project in a company.
In Part III, Reference information on D4S (Chapters 7 to 9), additional
information is provided that can support the execution of a D4S project:
D4S case studies from developing economies, ‘rules of thumb’ for
carrying out a D4S project and an overview of creativity techniques that
can be applied by a D4S team during a project. The Vietnamese version of the manual is available for download here: D4S Manual
